Container Nine was founded in 2004 as a conventional NVOCC and reinvented itself around 2018 as a digital forwarder. Customers get instant ocean quotes, live container tracking and a document portal instead of an emailed PDF and a phone call — which sounds obvious and is still not the industry norm.
The company moves roughly 60,000 TEU a year, mostly Asia to Europe and Asia to North America, for mid-sized shippers who are too big for a courier and too small for a carrier contract. Its own tracking platform pulls from carrier APIs, port community systems and AIS, and the technology team sits alongside operations rather than in a separate building.
Around 300 people work in Kwai Chung and at agent offices around the region. The company is honest that the digital transition is unfinished — plenty of the business still runs on spreadsheets — and that fixing it is precisely the work on offer.
