About the role
Commercial Lines Underwriting at Evergreen Assurance covers property damage, business interruption, public and employees' compensation liability for Hong Kong businesses — cold-storage operators in Kwai Chung, boutique hotels in Kowloon, main contractors on redevelopment sites in Kwun Tong. It is a portfolio you can physically go and look at, which is the part underwriters here tend to enjoy most.
We are recruiting a mid-level underwriter to take over a broker panel from a colleague moving to our reinsurance team. You would inherit live relationships with eight brokers, an existing renewal book of around 240 accounts, and a referral authority that we expect to increase once you have a full renewal cycle behind you.
The team is thirteen strong, sits together in Wan Chai, and works on-site because the surveyor debriefs, the broker drop-ins and the arguments about whether a sprinkler certificate is good enough all happen face to face.
What you'll do
- Underwrite new business and renewals within authority across property, business interruption and casualty lines
- Assess risk survey reports and set terms, conditions, deductibles and risk improvement requirements
- Manage a panel of broker relationships — quote turnaround, negotiation and the honest declines
- Monitor loss ratio and rate adequacy on your book, and act on deterioration before the year-end review does it for you
- Refer and present the accounts above your authority with a recommendation, not just a file
- Support claims colleagues on coverage questions arising from policies you wrote
What we're looking for
- 4+ years' commercial lines underwriting experience in the Hong Kong market
- Sound technical grasp of property, BI and liability wordings, and where the Hong Kong market's standard clauses differ
- Registered as a licensed technical representative (general business) with the Insurance Authority, or immediately eligible
- ANZIIF, ACII or Insurance Intermediaries Qualifying Examination papers completed
- Native Cantonese and business English — brokers switch mid-sentence and so will you
Nice to have
- Construction or engineering line exposure, including contractors' all risks
- Experience underwriting accounts with mainland China exposure
- Working relationships with Hong Kong loss adjusters and risk surveyors
What you get
- Non-contributory MPF top-up above the statutory minimum
- Medical, dental and staff discount on personal insurance lines
- Professional examination sponsorship and study leave for ACII
- 20 days annual leave plus two paid volunteering days
