About the role
Migrations are the sharp end of this company. A core banking workload with a four-hour change window, an insurer's policy administration system that has never been offline in daylight, a hospital cluster where the rollback plan is the only plan anyone will approve — that is what these two squads do, twelve engineers between them.
We are hiring externally for this because both squads have strong technical leads who want to stay technical. What is missing is a manager: someone to hold the delivery commitments, grow the engineers, and take the difficult conversation with a customer's programme director instead of passing it to the CTO.
You will report to the CTO, sit in the weekly architecture review, and be expected to keep enough technical credibility that your engineers respect your judgement in a design discussion. Roughly one day a week is spent on customer sites, mostly on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon East.
What you'll do
- Manage twelve engineers across two migration squads, including performance, progression and hiring.
- Own delivery for concurrent regulated migrations — scope, sequencing, change windows and the commitments made to customers.
- Run the technical governance for migrations with the architecture team, and be accountable when a cutover goes wrong.
- Grow the two technical leads into stronger leads rather than doing their job for them.
- Work with the customer engineering and commercial teams on feasibility before anything is promised in a contract.
- Be present for major cutovers, including the ones that start at 2am on a Sunday.
What we're looking for
- Nine or more years in software or infrastructure engineering, with at least three managing engineers directly.
- You have run complex technical delivery for external customers with contractual commitments attached.
- Credible technical depth in cloud infrastructure — Kubernetes, networking, migration patterns.
- Business Cantonese and English; conversational Mandarin for regional stakeholders.
- A management style you can articulate, and examples of engineers who grew under you.
Nice to have
- Experience in banking, insurance or public-sector technology in Hong Kong.
- Familiarity with HKMA cloud guidance and the evidence regulators expect.
- Previous ownership of an on-call organisation.
What you get
- Package reviewed annually against market with a transparent band
- 25 days annual leave at this level
- Medical and dental for the family, plus annual health screening
- MPF employer top-up to 9%
- Leadership coaching budget and one overseas conference a year
