Volunteer Programme Coordinator — 6-Month Paid Internship

About the role

Six hundred registered volunteers give the Trust roughly 21,000 hours a year: mealtime companions at our elderly centres, tutors for the after-school programme, marshals for community events, and a small group of retired nurses who are worth their weight in gold.

Coordinating them is unglamorous and genuinely matters. This six-month paid internship is for a current student or recent graduate who wants to find out whether the social sector suits them, by doing the work rather than shadowing it. You will start on rostering and volunteer communications, and by week four you will be running your own Saturday session with a supervisor on call rather than at your shoulder.

Michelle Yau, our Volunteer Services Manager, runs this internship twice a year and keeps in touch with everyone who has done it. Two are now permanent staff; several others used it to decide the sector was not for them, which is also a good outcome.

What you'll do

• Roster volunteers against service requests and chase confirmations before each session
• Run the volunteer WhatsApp and email channels, keeping notices short, clear and in Cantonese
• Deliver briefings at the start of sessions and lead a Saturday session yourself once trained
• Maintain the volunteer database — registrations, hours logged, training records and clearance status
• Help organise the annual volunteer appreciation day and the quarterly training workshops
• Collect feedback after each session and summarise it for the monthly team meeting

What we're looking for

• Current student or graduate within the last twelve months, in any discipline
• Able to commit to six months at four to five days a week, including most Saturdays
• Native Cantonese and enough English to handle bilingual notices
• Organised enough to keep a roster of sixty people straight, and calm when eight of them cancel

Nice to have

• Previous volunteering, student society committee or event organising experience
• Basic Canva or simple graphics skills for volunteer notices
• Interest in elderly or youth services
