About the role
Tsang & Partners' tax team is nine people advising Hong Kong trading groups, family investment holding structures and the inbound subsidiaries of European and Japanese parents. Roughly a third of our work is offshore profits claims; another third is transfer pricing documentation now that Hong Kong's rules have bedded in.
We need a consultant because the Inland Revenue Department has been asking sharper questions and our clients have been receiving longer letters. The role is advisory rather than compliance-heavy: compliance staff prepare the returns, and you are the one arguing the position.
Samuel Ho leads the practice and still writes the difficult submissions himself. You will draft alongside him for the first year, then take your own.
What you'll do
- Prepare and defend offshore profits claims, including drafting responses to IRD enquiry letters.
- Advise on profits tax, salaries tax and stamp duty implications of group reorganisations and share transfers.
- Prepare local files and master files under Hong Kong's transfer pricing documentation rules.
- Advise on double taxation agreement relief and certificate of resident status applications.
- Support clients through field audits and investigations, including the reconciliation schedules that settle them.
- Review profits tax computations prepared by the compliance team on the complex cases.
- Write client alerts whenever the IRD issues a new Departmental Interpretation and Practice Note.
What we're looking for
- Four or more years in Hong Kong tax, in practice or in an in-house tax function.
- HKICPA member or CTA qualified, or within one sitting of it.
- Strong grasp of the Inland Revenue Ordinance, particularly the source rules and the section 15 deeming provisions.
- Clear, persuasive written English — most of your output is argument on paper.
- Cantonese for client meetings; Mandarin is useful for PRC-related structures.
Nice to have
- Experience with PRC tax or the Greater Bay Area preferential regimes.
- Exposure to family office and trust structuring.
- Big 4 tax training that you want to use in a smaller, faster practice.
What you get
- Salary reviewed annually against a written banding structure
- HKICPA and TIHK fees plus CTA study support
- 18 days' annual leave and no expectation of email after 8pm
- Medical, dental and an annual body check
- Hybrid working, three days a week in Causeway Bay
