Tidewall builds the screening layer that sits between a payment being initiated and a payment being made. The founders came out of a card scheme's risk team in 2019, frustrated that every vendor product on the market had been tuned on North American data and produced nonsense false-positive rates on Asian name formats and remittance patterns.
The product does entity resolution, sanctions screening and behavioural scoring in under 60 milliseconds, and its Cantonese, Mandarin and romanised-name matching is the reason customers pick it over the incumbents. Around forty payment firms, virtual banks and licensed money changers across Hong Kong and Southeast Asia run on it.
The company is about seventy people in Cyberport and intends to stay small for a while longer. Hiring is slow and deliberate, engineers own features from design to on-call, and the founders still review every architecture decision doc. There is no sales floor culture here — the go-to-market team is four people and mostly technical.
